San Francisco, CA, September 10, 2007
Small Business California, which I founded, has spent a lot of time over the last few years on reducing the cost of workers’ compensation. We strongly supported Governor Davis’ legislation reducing medical cost in the workers’ compensation system and Governor Schwarzenegger’s legislation reducing the cost of permanent disability.

As a result of our efforts and that of the entire business community, costs have come down over 60% in the last three years.

This reduction in cost appears to be at an end with the Workers’ Compensation Insurance Rating Bureau’s Actuarial Committee recommending an increase in pure premiums of 3.5% to 5% effective January 1, 2008. These increases are due as a result of loss adjustment expenses not continuing their decline.

A recommendation by the Workers’ Compensation Insurance Bureau will go to the Insurance Commissioner and he can accept it, increase it, or decrease it. Insurance Companies are not bound by the Insurance Commissioner’s recommendations but usually file their rates somewhere close the Insurance Commissioner’s recommendations.

So what does this mean? Are rates going to go back up to levels businesses saw in 2003? The answer I think is no, providing there are no major legislative changes, no major cost decisions overthrowing the reforms, or measures put forth on the ballot destroying the reforms.

Small businesses around the state must make sure our voices are heard on this very important issue and Small Business California will be there monitoring developments. We have an email tree that currently goes out to about 2700 small businesses. This email will keep you current on not just workers’ compensation developments, but on health insurance, regulations, taxation and energy. If you are not on our email tree and would like to be, send me an email at shauge@cal-insure.com asking to be added to the list, or visit our SB-Cal website at www.smallbusinesscalifornia.org.

Workers Compensation -
How Much Protection is Enough?

San Francisco, CA, January 19, 2007
The good news is that in the past two years the cost of worker's compensation has become significantly more affordable for California businesses. Although for now the cost of worker's comp is less of a hurdle, the complexities of worker's compensation protections and compliance still present companies with a number of challenges.

"Companies struggle to find the right worker's compensation balance that minimizes company risk while providing employees with sufficient coverage. The Chamber has found a way to help their members find the right balance by providing members with all that they need to know to make informed decisions, and potentially save some money in the process," says Mariann Costello, chair/Small Business Advisory Council, and vice president/Scoma's Restaurant.

"The Chamber is committed to delivering membership benefits that help our member companies grow their businesses," says Leslie Milloy, vice president/marketing. "Through the efforts of the Chamber's Small Business Advisory Council, we are pleased to announce that the Chamber has partnered with a trusted workers compensation expert, and local San Francisco insurance broker, to offer a unique menu of services available only to Chamber members." As of January 19, Scott Hauge, CAL Insurance & Associates began providing San Francisco Chamber members with seminars, consultation and a unique, member-exclusive menu of services to include.

  • 1) Free safety & health, human resources & workers compensation guides on CD
  • 2) Professional one-on-one employer review and consultation
  • 3) Potential workers compensation cost savings

CAL Insurance was selected as the Chamber's Workers Compensation partner because of their dedication to California small business, superior customer service, strong relationships with insurance companies, and sensitivity towards managing insurance costs for Chamber members.

CAL Insurance and Associates Announces Winner of This Years Give Something Back Award

San Francisco, Calif, October 19, 2006—Last year CAL Insurance and Associates created the Give Something Back Award. This award is given to a company who "gives back" to the community. This year CAL Insurance and Associates has chosen Burr, Pilger and Mayer LLP to be the recipient of the Give Something Back Award.

Burr, Pilger & Mayer is an organization providing personal and business accounting, tax, and other related professional services to its clients. BPM feels an obligation to give back to the community.

Each year on the San Francisco Giants Opening Night, BPM hosts a fundraiser, which supports a variety of charitable organizations. The fundraiser earns money through the sale of tickets to the Giants game and the pre-party that the Burr, Pilger & Mayer hosts before the game.

Burr, Pilger & Mayer encourages employees, from staff to partners, to become involved as a community volunteer on an individual basis. The staff has adopted two local elementary schools where they read to the students, write to pals, judge essay contests and more.

And for non-profit organizations, BPM provides free ongoing seminars on a variety of topics. Nearly 10% of their clients are local nonprofit organizations.

These are just some of the reasons that CAL Insurance has chosen Burr, Pilger and Mayer to be this year's recipient of the Give Something Back Award.
